The students were originally going to be exchanging candy grams, but due to a recent change brought on by the students the fundraiser has been changed to Hearts for Haiti.

Starting today (1/20) students will be selling hearts for $1 where the buyer can write a message on it and it will hang in the school’s gymnasium. All the money collected will be donated to the Red Cross for the relief fund for Haiti.

The students from Raymond Cree Middle School all unanimously decided to divert their fundraising efforts to help fellow classmate Ciria Silva.

Ciria lost her mother and three siblings in a tragic New Year’s Day fire at their home. Ciria was staying with other relatives at the time.

The students from the school are all donating their fundraising profits to Ciria for a college fund, which have initially been intended for the year-end class trip. The community has stepped up as well providing money and clothes for Ciria. The fundraisers will continue, including singing telegrams to students for Valentine’s Day.

The program accepts eighth graders from neighboring school districts and preps them for algebra in high school. The foundation also brings in people who are currently employed in the work force and who use algebra as part of their daily life.

Now, due to lack of funding, the program has taken a hit and will start fundraising to try to cover the difference in cost. Last year the program cost $350,000 to run and was provided free to families. This year, they would like to keep the program free, it all depends on how the fundraising goes.

When it came time for the annual fundraising event at the Grand Rapids Public Museum, they decided to hold an event where people could visit the museum and watch some of the displays come to life as they have watched in the movie.

The museum enlisted the help of the local high school theatre students who helped pull off a successful night of fundraising. Over a thousand people attended the event which raised more than $20,000!

The school, inspired by their 6th grade student Julian Alex, decided to create and sell Braille Christmas Cards for $1 each.

Julian is unable to see through the center of his eyes making it impossible to read print. He was initially the only one at the school learning Braille, but soon other students and friends followed his footsteps. Currently there is a whole Braille club at the school.

After the Braille club visited the City Hall School, they were introduced to the Youth Emergency Shelter and immediately wanted to help. The school started out with a goal of 200 Braille Christmas Cards and in the end doubled their initial goal!

The pupils’ helped take pictures of the product as well as hand crafted drawings of some cakes.

The Church plans on selling 400 cookbooks. All money raised from the books will go towards new classroom equipment.

This year the students raised $2,400 running laps around the schools track for pledges. One student ran 46 laps in the cold 30-degree weather. The 11.5-mile trip didn’t seem to be much of a challenge for the freshman however, for she was quoted calling the jog, “A good work out.”

The students took the earning to a local Fred Meyers where they were given 15% off all apparel, 10% off other purchases, and then an additional 10% off their entire order. Teachers waited at the cash registers to approve gifts and make sure they would suit the children’s needs.

The pastries ranged from 12 chocolate houses to cakes, cookies, candy-filled chocolate boxes, and yule logs.

Food Show entries were judged by hospitality professionals who awarded Rachel Emmons first place for her two-tier cake she created.

As with all schools, they needed to find a new source of income for some of their teams. The debate team needed to rise nearly $1,000 for their travel expenses.

This year the school decided to hold a different kind of fundraiser, they held a holiday carnival for families. The carnival had face painting, cookie decorating, ornament making, and cup cake races. The debate team was allowed to decorate the school’s commons for the event.

The teachers at Lincoln Elementary have been helping these children for 25 years now.

The teachers used to just provide for around 12 students a year, but with the recession, this year was around 35 children. To help gather the extra funds the school held rummage fundraisers, which consisted of everything from school supplies to lollipops. Spirit days where another way where the school could raise money allowing kids to wear pajamas or nerdy clothes if they paid $1.

Lincoln Elementary raised $3,300 this year to help the needy school children of their community. A great accomplishment and something everyone, who participated in fundraising, can be proud of!
